About Security Camera Network

Who's behind this site?

Hey — I’m Jason Mercer, and I’ve spent the better part of the last decade working in and around the security camera industry in the Pacific Northwest.

My background isn’t a straight line. I started out working as a security gaurd for a international security company providing physical security services to mulit billion dollar companies. I participated in the security companies leadership training program and moved up to the role of site security manager for a pharmacuetical company. From there I moved into a sales and consulting role at a start up company selling security cameras which meant helping customers figure out what they actually needed versus what a manufacturer was trying to sell them. Eventually I ended up on the network and IT side of things, managing camera systems, troubleshooting IP configurations, and integrating surveillance setups with broader network infrastructure.

What that path gave me is a perspective most security camera websites don’t have: I’ve seen this industry from every angle. I know what installers actually deal with in the field. I know what gets oversold in the showroom. And I know what happens when a “simple” camera setup meets a real-world network.

Why I built this site

Here’s the honest answer: I got frustrated.

Every time someone asked me for a camera recommendation, the internet was full of review sites that clearly hadn’t touched the equipment — just recycled spec sheets and Amazon star ratings. Or worse, they’d recommend whatever paid them the highest commission regardless of whether it was actually good.

Security Camera Network exists to be something different. I write about cameras and surveillance systems the way I’d explain them to a neighbor — with real opinions, real context, and no patience for marketing fluff. When something is overpriced, I’ll say so. When a $35 camera genuinely surprises me, I’ll say that too.
