WHAT ARE EYEBALL CAMERAS?

Eyeball cameras are a type of security camera that resembles an eye in both form and function.

ANATOMY OF AN EYEBALL CAMERA

These types of cameras have two main parts listed below

  • CAMERA BODY: A round housing that contains the cameras image sensor and infrared LED’s

  • SOCKET HOUSING: A socket type housing that the camera body fits into. This part also serves as the mounting hardware to mount the camera to a wall or ceiling.

The round camera body fits inside the outer housing to form a ball and socket joint just like an eyeball. That is why they are called “eyeball cameras”. This simple design allows the camera to be easily positioned to get the camera view you desire.

PRO'S

These types of cameras have a few advantages over other types of surveillance cameras. This is due to their unique design and form factor. We will explore the different benefits this type of camera below.

  • SMALL SIZE: These cameras tend to be much smaller than other types of cameras. This makes them ideal for situations where you want your cameras to be less noticeable.
  • EASY TO RE-POSITION: Because the body of the camera is a ball inside a socket it is very easy to move the camera around. This simplifies installation since you can move the camera in all directions without having to loosen a bunch of different set screws.
  • EASY TO INSTALL: Again because of the ball and socket design it is easier to choose a place to install the camera. Other styles of camera’s limit which direction you can point the camera and how far you can move it in any direction. Eyeball cameras on the other hand allow you to freely point the camera in any direction

CON'S

There aren’t a lot of disadvantages with this type of camera. In fact the cons really depend on your personal prefrences and how you intend to use the camera.

  • SMALL SIZE: The smaller size may be seen as a disadvantage if you want your cameras to be more visible. Larger cameras are much more visible. This helps them act as a deterrent. The theory is that if people can see that you have cameras then they will be less likely to commit a crime.
  • EASY TO RE-POSITION: If you are concerned that someone might move your camera then this may not be the style of camera for you. While there is a set screw that helps hold the camera in position the camera can still be moved. (Note: how easily the camera can be moved will vary from different manufacturers and models)
